Vietnam’s defense industry has developed the XTC-03, a 16-ton 8×8 amphibious APC prototype equipped with a 30 mm automatic cannon and a Viettel thermal fire-control system.
According to a report by Defence Blog, the XTC-03 represents a significant step in Vietnam’s effort to reduce its dependence on legacy Soviet and Russian equipment while building domestic armored vehicle design capabilities.
The amphibious capability of the XTC-03 allows it to cross rivers and conduct coastal operations without preparation, an important feature for Vietnam’s geography of rivers, coastlines and delta terrain.
With the engine positioned at the front, the rear section remains available for troop transport and disembarkation, with up to eight soldiers exiting through the rear doors. The layout keeps infantry away from the engine and reduces exposure during disembarkation under fire.
Vietnam’s defense industrial base has developed significantly over the past decade, a movement driven by the strategic calculation that reducing dependence on any foreign supplier is an essential attribute for a country navigating complex relations with Russia and the United States.
Although Russian equipment dominated Vietnam’s arsenal for decades, the disruption of Russian defense exports caused by the war in Ukraine and Western sanctions has added further urgency to programs that develop domestic alternatives or diversify supply. The XTC-03 fits directly into this context.
